Very early morning thru noon - leaving earlier if the birding is slow. | Bluff Point in Groton CT - a 50 minute drive from Storrs. | "Hot Spot" birding dawn to 10-11am any day that suitable weather conditions appear. On good days large numbers of migrating warblers are often seen at this location after a clear night with northerly winds following periods of stalling weather - southerly winds and/or rainy days. These mornings are typically cool so bring warm clothes, gloves, and a hat. Call Steve Morytko for details (429-9600). This trip is often done on short notice and requires very early rising. | |

Meeting and program - Owl Prowl. Owls in Connecticut. Mark Szantyr, Secretary of the Connecticut Bird Records Committee, will give a short presentation on owls that can be seen in the Storrs area, followed (weather permitting) by an evening field trip to try to find some owls. Potential species include Barred Owl, Great Horned Owl, and Eastern Screech-Owl. Northern Saw-whet and Long-eared are conceivable .... but a real long shot. Dress warm! | |

Although well known for their nectar feeding, hummingbirds cannot grow, reproduce or molt their feathers without the protein that eating insects provides. Gregor will talk about his research on the ways in which hummingbirds capture insects and the role insectivory plays in their lives. | |

Meeting and speaker. Dr. Jamie Rotenberg will describe his work at El Eden Ecological Research which is in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. Established in 1990, El Eden is the first privately owned protected area dedicated to research in biological conservation in Mexico. The area was founded by a group of scientists and conservationists interested in the conservation of the biodiversity of this northeast portion of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Jamie is a conservation biologist who has spent several years studying the birds and the ecology of this region. Meeting and Biennial Auction. It's time once again for the NOS Biennial Auction. Mark your calendars for Friday, May 7, 2004. Preview the fine and fun assortment of auction goodies starting at 7:00 PM, while noshing on tasty refreshments. The auction action will get underway around 7:30.
We are looking for donations to the biennial fund raiser which means it's time to scour your home for those rare, fun, or valuable treasures. Items to consider donating include: bird books, books that sort of have something to do with birds or birding, bird art, art, optics, puzzles, feeders, bird houses, guide books, signed books, and as always, items you "won" at the last auction in 2002. If you have items for donation and cannot attend the auction contact the email list, Steve Morytko, or another member for help. |
