Sept thru early Oct when the weather is right. Very early morning thru noon - earlier if the birding is slow. Bluff Point in Groton CT - a 50 minute drive from Storrs. "Hot Spot" birding dawn to 10-11am any day that suitable weather conditions appear. On good days large numbers of migrating warblers are often seen at this location after a clear night with northerly winds that follows periods of stalling weather - southerly winds and/or rainy days. These mornings are typically cool so bring warm clothes, gloves, a hat and your good humor. Call Steve Morytko for details (429-9600). This trip is often done on short notice and requires very early rising. You are allowed to sleep on the way if you aren't driving.

Frank Gallo presents: "Birding in South Africa" Frank is the Director of Eco-Travel and Field Studies at New Canaan Nature Center and for many years has been a very active member of the Connecticut birding community. He regularly gives talks about his travels (including a presentation on New Zealand for NOS a couple of years ago) and recently put on his first photography show, which included many of his pictures from South Africa. He will talk about his trips to South Africa to look for birds as varied as ostriches, bee-eaters, and penguins.

Meeting and program.Carina Gjerdrum presents: "Tufted Puffins in British Columbia". Carina is currently a research scientist in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UConn. For her Master's degree she spent two summers studying the breeding Tufted Puffins at Triangle Island, one of western Canada's most important seabird colonies. She'll talk about her research findings, the seabirds of Triangle Island, and about the joys of living for months on a remote rock way offshore in the Pacific.
